picstarsKitchen Wizard........the Spiral of life

kwslate2The dark days are here and Jimmy is itching to work on so many projects. Re-building the front wall on the old house, clearing the entrance for better visibility in Lanesboro. But it all can wait until his shoulder has recovered fully.

So in the 'ol mean time he has plans for some indoor projects. The kitchen is a good place to start. At this time of the year we heat only the rooms that we are using.. The kitchen is always warm as the range is lighting all of the time.

First he fits a gas hob, as we have been using our camping gas rings until now, which was fine, but it is much safer to have them fitted. We decided to use slates as a worktop, and Dave has enough left over from his roof to do the job, old brass taps find their new home here too. Wow it looks great. We will probably put a sealer on top to keep the slate from sheding each time it is wiped.

We have gotten some dust sheets, the type that painters use to cover floors and furniture as protectors. They have made great curtains for most of the windows, and we have hung them on bamboo canes from the garden. They look good and keep heat in the rooms overnight, some coloured cord for tibacks would suit, but for now coloured wool is just the thing. We are trying out some natural dyes to use on them. Onion skins make a really good yellow, blackberries should also make a suitable colour, so we will wait until next seasons crop, (we are not in any hurry) rhubarb root, beetroot, and lichen too, it will be exciting.

All the wax has been used up on candle making, and the christmascards and presents are just completed, and so for the piece de resistance

We have been on the lookout for coloured tiles to create a mosaic feature on the wall above the cooker. Large tiles or broken pieces even as we intend to break them. I got some a few months ago from the local tile shop but the colours are very bland, and a promise of waste ones in the future as we are not in a hurry.

And then they appear, all good things come to those who wait. Lying on top of a skip in a nearby town, there is a board with multicoloured mosaics. The shop owner said we would have to be quick as the truck is on it's way to take them to the dump.

We soaked them with water left them outside until the frost came and then with the application of a little elbow grease "hey presto". Once they are all sorted into groups of colours we are ready to begin.

The board when dry can be cut in half and used to make slelves for the workshop, everything finds a place.

kw3swirlNothing goes to waste ! the Harvey's Bristol cream bottle from last year's Christmas's triffle has been lying in wait. It was too nice to throw into the bottle bank and I knew it would be put to good use. It is the perfect centre piece and starting point for picture. Once it is in place a swirl gradually and naturally grew.

It is taking on a life of it's own, there was no real plan in mind. It is a slow process, with me buttering each tile and Jimmy creating this beautiful picture. At the end of each day it inspires the next step. It already is captivating and hypnotic, it is impossible not to look
