So the moon is new and we have had a few weeks of very dry weather also the temperatures are good , there is a lot to be done now .The new garden which we have been preparing for a year now is starting to look like something. Last autumn we dug it over completely upturning the sod ,as it is almost an acre we used dickie , hes got the strength

The land here has not been tilled for manys the year ,so after many years of cattle pounding the earth the structure has become damaged. Rushes are growing in it , which of course help to trap the water making for a very wet area. So now we have opened drains around the garden \and have rotovated it so it at least has no big clumps of grass and rush roots, Next job is to plant some shelter around it, we will use Salix and Cornus (dogwoods) and some Corylus (hazel) also. they should grow fairly fast and provide shelter from the north and east winds . We will also plant some odd trees of Syringa (lilac) and Eucalyptus, which grow very well around here.....

Because some of our new garden is online now we can have more space in the old one for the root crops . We have decided to plant the potatoes in the new garden we have used Orla and red duke of york as the earlier crop and w eare trying queens as the later ..

Vegetable seed has become very expensive lately, so this year we made a saving by buying our seed from the uk..from a certified seed merchant. Also as we have the glasshouse now we can start some stuff a bit earlier . The peas have been sown in gutters in the glasshouse also broad and runner beans. All the brassicas are sown as are the leeks pak choi, fennel celery etc .We are trying to grow some artichoke this year as something new. The asparagus is coming on well this is its second year, so w ewont use toomuch if any of it, but just keep encouraging the crowns. We also have plans to get all the fruit garden in one place so as to make it easier for netting when the fruit sets. The strawberries have been moved also and runners harvester to provide some new plants.
