Its amazing how fast a  vegetable plot fills up, so we have decided to bring another patch onstream , this will enable us to get a good crop rotation system in operation. We have increased our potatoe production this year so some of this new patch will  initially be planted with them. Rirst thing we have to do is cut the grass from the plot which is about a half acre, not as easy as it seems as there is over forty years of grass on it. The mower which has been lying up for a few  years is taken out and pressed in to action and its not long before we can see the Earth beneath. The next step is more physical requiring the use of forks and sweat The weather now is very windy, great drying conditions  the grass is already a lot drier than yesterday

Next its ploughing time this turns out to be a bit tricky as the soil after  years of compaction is fairly wet but we carry on anyway, soon the smell of newly turned sod is evident and its time to leave it for now to dry out a bit.

So for 2009

First thing is to get the plot dug over  and for this we use our friend dickie, so the sods are turned and its left over the winter to breakdown. We have also organised to collect farmyard manure from a local man  and some poultry manure from carrick on shannon..So as this  ground has  been neglected for a long time it will require much work to get it right.

Moving on Spring 2009
